University of Georgia, Georgia

When the University of Georgia was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly on January 27, 1785, Georgia became the first state to charter a state-supported university. In 1784 the General Assembly had set aside 40,000 acres of land to endow a college or seminary of learning. At the first meeting of the board of trustees, held in Augusta on February 13, 1786, Abraham Baldwin was selected president of the university. A native of Connecticut and a graduate of Yale University, Baldwin — who had come to Georgia in 1784 — drafted the charter adopted by the General Assembly. The university was actually established in 1801 when a committee of the board of trustees selected a land site. John Milledge, later a governor of the state, purchased and gave to the board of trustees the chosen tract of 633 acres on the banks of the Oconee River in northeast Georgia. Josiah Meigs was named president of the university and work was begun on the first building, originally called Franklin College in honor of Benjamin Franklin and now known as Old College. The university graduated its first class in 1804. The curriculum of traditional classical studies was broadened in 1843 to include courses in law, and again in 1872 when the university received federal funds for instruction in agriculture and mechanical arts. Seventeen colleges and schools, with auxiliary divisions, carry on the university’s programs of teaching, research, and service. These colleges and schools and the dates of their establishment as separate administrative units are: Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, 1801; College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, 1859; School of Law, 1859; College of Pharmacy, 1903; D. B. Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, 1906; College of Education, 1908; Graduate School, 1910; C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry College of Business, 1912; Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, 1915; College of Family and Consumer Sciences, 1933; College of Veterinary Medicine, 1946; School of Social Work, 1964; College of Environment and Design, 1969; School of Public and International Affairs, 2001; the College of Public Health, 2005, the Odum School of Ecology, 2007 and the College of Engineering, 2012. The Division of General Extension, now the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center & Hotel, was incorporated into the university in 1947. In 1931 the General Assembly of Georgia placed all state-supported institutions of higher education, including UGA, under the jurisdiction of a single board. This organization, known as the University System of Georgia, is governed by the board of regents. The board of regents’ executive officer, the chancellor, exercises a general supervisory control over all institutions of the University System, with each institution having its own executive officers and faculty. With its comprehensive reach, the university’s 17 colleges and schools enroll 36,000 students and have produced 305,000 alumni living worldwide. University of Georgia School of Health Sciences and Public Health, Georgia

The College of Public Health at the University of Georgia was established in 2005 in response to the compelling need to address important health concerns in Georgia. During its first decade, the College has experienced the establishment of a highly productive research culture with total active research funding in excess of $30 million and continuous creation of new academic programs that now serve 900 students. Originally housed in seven different locations on the UGA campus, the College is the largest program located at the UGA Health Sciences Campus (HSC) in terms of enrollment, funding for research and actual space occupied by its faculty and students. The University of Georgia College of Public Health is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).  The Council on Education for Public Health is an independent agency recognized by the US Department of Education to accredit schools of public health and public health programs offered in settings other than schools of public health. These schools and programs prepare students for entry into careers in public health. The College of Public Health was re-accredited by CEPH in September 2014 for a seven-year term, extending to December 30, 2021.  The College of Public Health completed a major self-study in October 2013, to prepare for re-accreditation. The University of Georgia Health Sciences Campus (HSC), which has become a central location and historic home for the College of Public Health, is a 58-acre property located between Prince and Oglethorpe Avenues near downtown Athens, Georgia. It has a rich legacy in the Athens community. For more than 120 years, it has served students of various ages, levels and disciplines. From 1891 to 1932, the campus served as the State Normal School, Georgia’s first teachers’ college and the historical center of what is now known as Athens’ Normaltown district. The oldest surviving buildings were built during this period, including the Carnegie Library Learning Center (CLLC). Built in 1910 with a grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, the building now serves as a student center and digital library. The campus served as the site for the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School from 1953 until 2005, when a series of federally mandated base closures paved the way for UGA to convert the historic site into the UGA Health Sciences Campus. In 2012, the College of Public Health officially held its first classes there while the College’s department of epidemiology and biostatistics became the first UGA unit to call the new campus home. Now with more than 200 faculty and staff, 900 students and more than $30 million in active research funding, the College is the cornerstone of the campus in terms of enrollment and research funding. Ivane Javakhashvili Tbilisi State University, Georgia

The first-ever national university in the Caucasus was opened in 1918 laying the foundation for a European-type higher school in Georgia, based on Georgian educational traditions. The idea of foundation of the university first emerged as far back as the early 19th century amid intensification of the struggle for liberation from Russian empire. A new generation led by great Georgian public figure Ilia Chavchavadze, with whom a new stage of spiritual revival in the history of our country is connected, appeared on the scene in the sixties of the 19th century. The struggle for establishing the university became especially vigorous during those years. Real possibilities of establishing a higher school have opened up after the Nobiliary Manorial Estate Bank was founded in Tbilisi. It was the only bank throughout the Russian empire, which spent its incomes to promote the cultural-educational and economic interests of the nation. From the beginning of the 20th century Ivane Javakhishvili, who underwent his studies in Petersburg and became its assistant professor, started to organize the foundation of the Georgian University. From the very first days of the February 1917 revolution, Ivane Javakhishvili, who was in Petersburg by then, started active preparations for the opening of a higher educational institution. The first gathering of the founders of the University Society was held at the apartment of Petre Melikishvili in Tbilisi on May 12. The gathering was chaired by Ekvtime Takaishvili. It was just on that day, when the Georgian Free University Society was established, which later played a huge role in the foundation of the University. In autumn 1917 the founders of the University intensified their efforts to open a higher educational institution. It was decided to establish only one faculty initially – the faculty of philosophy, which would have united humanitarian fields as well as natural science and mathematics. In late December Georgian press already reported about the enrollment of the first students into the Georgian University. Thus, the first-ever national University in the Caucasus was opened on January 26, 1918, the day of commemoration of King David the Builder (new style February 8). Upon the nomination of Ivane Javakhishvili, the Council of Professors elected Petre Melikishvili the first rector of the university. Ivane Javakhishvili took charge of the faculty of philosophy. The following persons delivered lectures at the newly established university: Ivane Javakhishvili, Iustine Abuladze, Giorgi Akhvlediani, Philipe Gogichaishvili, Ekvtime Takaishvili, Korneli Kekelidze, Shalva Nutsubidze, Elisabed Bagrationi-Orbeliani, Dimitri Uznadze, Vanda Gambashidze, Ilia Kipshidze, Ioseb Kipshidze, Akaki Shanidze, Andria Benashvili, Andria Razmadze, Ivane Beritashvili, and Grigol Tsereteli. In 1989 the Tbilisi State University was named after its founder, Ivane Javakhishvili. Today the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University is one of the first scientific-research institutions of Georgia. It implements about 200 local and international scientific grant programs annually. The Tbilisi State University is one of the largest higher educational institutions by its scales. Today about 22 thousand students are undergoing studies at  seven faculties of TSU. Along with bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs, the Tbilisi State University also implements higher vocational education, as well as short and long term certification programs. Based on close cooperation with foreign universities, Georgian students have opportunities to participate in exchange and joint international educational programs and gain double academic degrees. Tbilisi State University is an active member of leading international education networks and is proud of its alumni – prominent professors, scientists and graduates, who have successfully integrated into the European community and gained the recognition worldwide. TSU offers a wide variety of degree programs at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels and short courses offered in English language attracting students from all over the world.  The internalization of TSU is fast- paced and it aims at creating multicultural environment that will enhance teaching and research opportunities. TSU promotes the equality to access education and believes in engaging and valuing all students and staff. The history of higher medical education originates from October 1918 when the Faculty of Medicine was established at the Tbilisi State University. Since May 1919, by decision of the Board of Professors, the Medical Faculty continued to exist as an independent unit until 1930 when the Tbilisi State Medical Institute was founded on the basis of the Medical Faculty. In 1995, higher medical education was restored at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, first at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine as medical specialization, and in 2000 as an independent faculty. Currently the faculty is running one-tier academic programs for physicians and dentists. Since 2006, within the framework of TEMPUS project, there has been operating a new bachelor’s program in occupational therapy in full accordance with the Bologna Process and Tuning Methodology. In clinical and theoretical departments of the faculty, teaching process is conducted in the leading medical institutions. Distinguished students receive professional training in Germany, at the academic study clinics of the Universities of Leipzig and Dresden. The faculty is running alternative to residency post-diploma academic programs, as well as Master’s (Public Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics) and Doctoral programs. During the last few years, numerous scientific conferences (among them international) dedicated to actual problems of medicine were organized by the faculty. The academic staff published scientific works in high impact scholarly journals; textbooks, monographs, and translations were issued as well. The faculty academic staff permanently participates in national and international scientific grant projects. Georgian American University, Georgia

The Georgian American University (GAU) was established as an MBA project of Elene Jamarjashvili MBA, in 2001, during her study at Atlanta State University (USA). Initially the university was designed as a School of Law with the graduates to be granted a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. In Atlanta, Elene Jamarjashvili met Kenneth A. Cutshaw, a prominent lawyer in the United States and Europe. Mr. Cutshaw was sincerely interested in the establishment of the university and agreed to help the university establish a partnership with one of the leading American Law Schools – American University’s Washington College of Law (Washington, DC). In the beginning of 2002, Elene Jamarjashvili returned to Tbilisi and began to refine the business plan and look for suitable investor(s). At that time she met R. Michael Cowgill, the US funded consultant to the Georgian Government for implementing the Baku-Ceyhan (BTC) and South Caucasus (SCP) pipeline projects. Mr. Cowgill agreed to advise Ms. Jamarjashvili and then become the University President. The demand in Tbilisi for a truly western University was so pronounced that despite the fact that at that time there were already two international business schools in operation, the interest in a program offering joint programs in Business and Law was substantial enough to move forward with the opening of a Business School and Law School at the Georgian American University in 2005. For the 2012/2013 academic year, GAU moved to a new campus location (8 Merab Aleksidze St.) which was more in line with its high university standards. The 6,000 sqm building contains large classrooms, a modern library/computer center, café, gym, auditoriums and a theater. This, together with expansive grounds creates a pleasant and productive academic environment. In 2014 GAU has been granted 5 year accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia. All the academic programs of GAU are accredited and fully relevant with the standards set by the Ministry of Education and Science. In addition GAU is realizing the Bologna Process principles. the library contains thousands of text books, mainly in the spheres of Business, Law, International Relations, Natural Sciences and Sciences and Humanities and Liberal Arts. The library includes books in English, Georgian, French, Russian, and German languages. The GAU library is available to students, teachers and the staff of GAU, with the use of a personal identification card which is issued by GAU. The library has two separate spaces: 1. Book inventory which also includes reading areas; and 2. Computer Center. The resources offered by the library contribute to the improvement of the quality of the academic process at GAU.  In November 2012 GAU started integrating new technologies into the library, including an electronic catalogand a modern security system.
