The Belarusian State Medical University is the leading higher medical educational institution of the Republic of Belarus, which has a well-deserved international authority and recognition. The beginning of its history dates back to 1921, when it was announced the opening of the Belarusian State University, which at that time included the medical faculty. In 1930, the Belarusian Medical Institute was organized on the basis of the faculty. June 28, 2001 Minsk State Medical Institute was renamed into the state higher educational institution “Belarusian State Medical University”. Since 2001, BSMU has the status of the leading medical university of the Republic of Belarus. The faculty includes more than 880 teachers, more than 64% of them have a degree. BSMU is taught by 3 corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus; 12 laureates of the State Prize of the USSR, BSSR and the Republic of Belarus; 12 honored scientists of the BSSR (Republic of Belarus); 3 honored doctors of the BSSR (Republic of Belarus); 1 Honored Worker of Education of the Republic of Belarus and 1 Honored Health Worker of the Republic of Belarus. More than 350 employees of clinical departments have the highest medical category. Since 1954, the Central Scientific Research Laboratory (TSNIL) has been functioning at the University. In 2012, TsNIL was reorganized into the Research Unit with 6 research laboratories and 8 research groups of about 100 researchers and laboratory technicians. In terms of the volume of scientific research carried out, the level of material and technical equipment and the staff of the Central Research Institute of the University is comparable with the branch research institute. Along with individual assignments of state programs, the University employees carry out innovative projects and projects funded by the Belarusian Foundation for Basic Research. Over the years, BSMU, the only one among the republic’s educational institutions, is the parent organization executing work on two state scientific and technical programs. Gomel State Medical University Homiel State Medical University is public teaching university based in Gomel, Belarus. In 1990 Gomel State Medical University was founded as per resolution of the Council of Ministers and Order of the Minister of Health of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. It is the youngest of four medical universities in Belarus. The main campus of Gomel State Medical University is located in downtown Gomel, with 18 adjacent clinical sites spread across the city. Faculty includes 276 members with more than one-third holding MD/PhD degree. Education at Gomel State Medical University includes five to six-year programs in basic and clinical medical science. Upon admission to University students enter one of four different schools (faculties): General Medicine, Medical Diagnostics, Education for Foreign Students or the Faculty of Pre-University Training – a one-year program which provides the full-time undergraduate course for admission to University. Grodno State Medical University  is a university in Grodno, Belarus. It specialises in medicine and medical psychology. It is the oldest medical school in Belarus and is considered, according some international sources, the best medical university in Belarus. GrSMU is as a successor of the first medical school in Belarus, the Grodno Medical Academy, established in 1775 by Antoni Tyzenhaus, former mayor of Grodno, for improving almost nonexistent healthcare system in the city. Jean-Emmanuel Gilibert, French botanist, Freemason and medical doctor, became its first rector. Under his rule were trained first doctors (former illiterate peasants), built botanical garden and a chemist’s shop. The academy progressed quickly, so soon in 1781 it was reorganized into the Medicine Faculty of Vilna University. The medical school was renovated only during Soviet-era time in 1958. Firstly, it was a small university, but with one of the best theoretical and practical base in BSSR. Officially got its university status only in 2000. There are 45 departments of university spread across the city. Main building, completed in 1974, located at Gorkogo st. 80. Normally two or three students share one room. There are separate arrangements for both boys and girls. At the dining room foreign students are able to prepare their national food. Foreign TV channels are available as well. The maintenance personnel keeps the students hostels clean on the daily basis and make all the students living in the hostel strictly follow the rules and regulations. Vitebsk State Medical University  was founded in November 1934. It included 32 theoretical and clinical departments. Since September 1981 Vitebsk State Medical University started to train the overseas students on Preliminary Training, Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculties. The number of foreign students was increasing and in 1997 the Faculty of Overseas Students Training was opened.
