The Medical University of Plovdiv was established as a medical faculty of Plovdiv University in 1945. In 1950 the faculty became the independent Medical Academy – Plovdiv. It was renamed in 1972 to Higher Medical Institute – Plovdiv. The Faculty of Dental Medicine was established in 1974, while a Medical College was created in 1997 as a subsidiary of the Medical University of Plovdiv. The Higher Medical Institute was renamed to Medical University of Plovdiv in 2002 after a decision by Bulgaria`s National Assembly. It includes the Faculties of Medicine, Dental medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, a Department of Languages and Specialized training, a medical college and a hospital with 2000 beds. Facilities include laboratories, clinics and units for diagnostics and treatment, research activities and training of medical and dental students. The duration of training in medicine is 6 years. It involves training in preclinical and clinical disciplines, as well as a one-year clinical rotation.The basic and special medical disciplines are studied in their logical consequence and interrelation. The teaching process is in agreement with the modern requirements of higher education in medicine. The lecturers and teachers with long years of professional, research and pedagogical experience, as well as the modern facilities and equipment, are the prerequisites for the excellent theoretical training and development of practical skills in the physicians graduating from MU- Plovdiv.After taking the State Examinations, the graduates obtain the educational and qualification degree of Master of Science and the professional qualification of physician. The history of the present-day Library and Information Centre dates back to August, 1945 when a university library was established at the time of the foundation of Plovdiv State University. In June 1950, the two university faculties became independent higher schools – I. P. Pavlov Medical Academy and V. Kolarov Higher Agricultural Institute. The university library was separated and the library at I. P. Pavlov Medical Academy began its own development with a collection of 18 000 volumes. Today the Library and Information Centre is located on 1 772 square metres comprising one main and four branch libraries. The collection includes over 173 000 library items: books, dissertations and periodicals in Bulgarian and other languages covering all areas of medical science. The library provides modern infrastructure and facilities. The library services are carried out by an automated library system integrating the newly introduced RFID technology. The comfortable and functional library environment includes reading rooms, computer labs, doctoral students reading rooms, group study areas and a digitization studio. The libraries provide 375 users seats, 75 of them computer-equipped.Free Internet access, including wireless connection is provided on the library premises as well as remote access to online resources for registered library users. Student accommodation is in the hotel-hostel houses of HMI with 880 beds in one- or two-bedded rooms, comfortably furnished and toilet facilities. The Medical University of Varna (MU-Varna) is a Bulgarian state school for higher education dedicated to training specialists in the fields of medicine and healthcare who graduate with the educational and qualification degrees of Master, Bachelor and Professional Bachelor. The University has a legal entity status with the following scope of business activities: training of cadres and professional qualification; training of PhD students; postgraduate education for medical and non-medical cadres; conducting medical diagnosis, prevention, consultation, rehabilitation, and expert services at the university hospitals; scientific research and applied sciences; international cooperation in the field of education and science; administrative, social, sport, publishing, information, and other activities. The University was founded as a Higher Medical Institute by a Decree No. 414 from November 12, 1960 of the Presidium of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria and Order No. 208 from January 19, 1961 of the Ministry of Health. October 1, 1961 is considered its birthdate – the first school day of the first academic year at the first higher education medical school in Northeastern Bulgaria. Faculty of Medicine is a main part of the University structure uniting 20 departments and 18 teaching and research sectors. Pleven Medical University, Bulgaria

Medical University – Pleven is one of the five medical Universities in Bulgaria. It was established in 1974, expanding the horizons, size and reputation of the City Hospital, founded in 1865. Today, combining traditions of the past with the possibilities of the present, it incorporates educational and therapeutic facilities, contemporary pre-clinical base, University Hospital with more than 1000 beds and clinics in all major medical fields, as well as a large number of specialized clinics and research units with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Highly qualified lecturers with comprehensive academic experience are employed. The educational process is carried out in 24 departments by more than 60 Professors and 300 Assistant Professors. Most of them are members of national and international scientific and medical societies and authors of research studies. The University has two student hostels with over 400 beds. The hostel rooms are double- and triple- bed rooms, centrally heated, each having a bathroom. Students are not required to live in the hostels and may choose private accommodation instead. Meals are provided at the students’ canteen at a discount. The sports facilities at the University enable the students to have regular physical training in different sport disciplines. There is an indoor multipurpose sports center with basketball and volleyball fields and a tennis court. The library at MU-Pleven is the only one of its size in North-West and Central Bulgaria, specializing in medical literature. It was established in 1974 with the main purpose of facilitating the educational, scientific and diagnostic needs of the University and the University Hospital. The library is divided into several sectors: borrowing section with free access; reading room for lecturers with Internet access; reading room for students; reading room for self-study with audio and video materials; internet hall; depository and offices. Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski Faculty of Medicine, Bulgaria

The University of Sofia (St. Kliment Ohridski) or simply Sofia University is the oldest higher education institution in Bulgaria, founded on 1 October, 1888. The edifice of the university was constructed between 1924 and 1934 with the financial support of the brothers Evlogi Georgiev and Hristo Georgiev, whose sculptures are now featured on its façade, and has an area of 18,624 m² and a total of 324 premises. The university has 16 faculties and three departments, where over 21,000 students receive their education. It had 4 regular and 3 additional lecturers and 49 students. It was founded as a higher pedagogical course, it became a higher school after a few months and a university in 1904. The University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski” is the first university library and the largest academic library in Bulgaria. It is a modern cultural and educational institution, which combines traditional library and information services with up-to-date technologies and research tools of the contemporary information society. The Sports Department at Sofia University was founded in 1949. Initially its staff numbered 5 instructors who trained students in athletics, gymnastics and swimming. Thirty years later, in 1979, the Department already had a staff of 25 outstanding trainers and sportsmen. Opened at the same time as the first Bulgarian University in Sofia in 1888, the University Library still plays important role in the development of Bulgarian science and education as a cultural institute of national importance. The University Library was first located in the building of the First Secondary School for Men in Sofia, where was situated the Institute of Higher Education. For the second academic year a students’ reading-room was opened. In 1933 the library was moved to a new building. Since December 1934 till present the University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski” is located in this building, which is part of the national architectural heritage. Starting with no more than 2,577 titles, in 1912 the Library held more than 80,000 volumes. Today the University Library has large and diverse holdings of over 2,620,000 volumes of scientific literature, rare and valuable editions, periodicals, electronic media and others. Its collection of old-print, rare, valuable and unique publications is exceptionally rich. Annually more than 20,000 library items are acquired and more than 30,000 readers use its services by ordering over 340,000 library items. Faculty of Medicine of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” has been founded in 1917 through a Decision made by the Parliament amending the Education Law, and approved by Decree No. 21 of Tzar Ferdinand (Published in State Gazette No. 266 of November 29th 1917). The newly established Faculty receives for its needs buildings of First High School for Boys, situated on Dunav Street 2, as well as Aleksandrovska Hospital, and Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital “Princess Maria Louise”. ASH was established as an independent unit at the University in 1991. by order of the then rector of the Sofia University Academician Nikola Popov on the basis of the Academic Autonomy Act 1990, Ordinance No. 3 on Student Hostels of May 29, and Decision of the Rector’s Council of 30 January 1991. The tasks of the Department “Social and household services” are related to the maintenance of the functional and operational condition of the university hostels and chairs intended for students’ needs. The unit has more than 6300 beds in the hostels in the hut. “Student’s City”, 3 student chairs, where about 3,000 people eat daily, a restaurant in the Rector’s building, and several cafes in faculty buildings. The academic staff of the faculty comprises: 70 professors and associate professors, 137 assistants and lecturers working in 24 Departments. During the academic year 2013/2014 in the faculty are trained 1100 students, including 95 foreign students from Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Students are trained in buildings with up-to-date furnished lecture halls and laboratories. Epending on the chosen major, the practical training is organized either at the training and experimental base of the University, the clinics of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the University hospital, the regional veterinary-medical centres, the selection centres, stations for artificial insemination, dairy farms, breeding cooperative and private farms. Information services are provided to students and lecturers by a library and information centre with over 400 000 volumes of specialized literature, as well specialized periodicals in Bulgarian, English, French, German and Russian. The libraries have well-organized internal and international book exchange with 35 countries and 108 universities. Students can use hostels with over 1660 beds available and well-furnished canteens, disco clubs, cafeterias and shops.
