Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Singapore

On 5 August 2013 the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), a joint initiative between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), opened its doors to its inaugural cohort of 54 students.

The students will pursue an innovative curriculum developed by a team within the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial. The students will gain experience in a wide range of clinical settings from an early stage in the course and will use the very latest learning technology, including South East Asia’s first Anatomage Table which displays life-sized 3D images of full body anatomy. Imperial developed course content is loaded onto students’ iPads to enable them to prepare for their team-based learning sessions. On successful completion of the course, students will be awarded a Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) jointly between Imperial and NTU.

In time, annual recruitment will rise to 200+ new students and at full capacity, there will be around 1,000 students studying on the five-year undergraduate medicine course.The Faculty Singapore Board, which comprises senior academics and administrators from the College and the Faculty of Medicine, oversees Imperial’s responsibilities in relation to the collaboration.

LKCMedicine offers a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree programme that has an innovative bespoke curriculum designed to meet the healthcare needs of Singapore. It draws extensively from the world-renowned Imperial College London’s medical curriculum and leverages on the strengths of NTU in engineering, biomedical research, humanities and business.

A research-intensive public university, Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) has 33,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students in the colleges of Engineering, Business, Science, and Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences. NTU is also home to work-class autonomous institutes and various leading research centres. NTU’s many academic partners include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, Cambridge University, Technische Universität München, Peking University and Waseda University.

All LKC Medicine students are guaranteed accommodation within one of the 18 on-campus Halls of Residence, where student can take part in an enriching array of multicultural Hall activities and develop lifelong relationships with students from various backgrounds, cultures, nationalities and academic disciplines.

An on-campus Medical Centre provides outpatient and minor surgery services. The NTU Healthy Lifestyle Unit organises regular health education and healthy lifestyle programmes for students, as well as health and wellbeing programmes such as the provision of free eye screening.

The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine aims to attract world-class biomedical and clinical research and teaching faculty members. Over the years,The college has successfully built a team of over 400 top quality staff members comprising of both faculty and non-faculty members.

There  faculty members are instrumental to the School in enhancing medical education, and helping to raise standards in healthcare practice and research in Singapore. The educators, working with the School’s clinical partners, will help deliver an integrated teaching programme to train and mentor a new generation of physicians for Singapore. Faculty involved in research will also have opportunities to explore collaborative or interdisciplinary projects with other scientists and researchers in Singapore’s vibrant biomedical and academic communities. These will be greatly facilitated with the School’s two major capital developments, Experimental Medicine Building at NTU, with first class research and education facilities, and Clinical Sciences Building at Novena campus (to be ready in 2016) containing state-of-the-art research and learning facilities immediately adjacent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, a partner teaching hospital of the School.
