Naval Academy of Medicine, Russia

Naval Academy of Medicine is first higher medical institutions in Russia to prepare medical personnel for medical service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Naval Academy of Medicine was established in 1798 as the Medical-Surgical Academy which in 1808 renamed into Imperial Medical Academy. It was the first and foremost scientific, educational and medical center, who published the first original Russian medical textbooks. YV Villas, who was the chief medical inspector of the Russian Army for 50 years, established the military medicine in Russia. From 1841 to 1856 N.I. Pirogov (surgeon) played very significant role in the development of medical science, practice and education. He developed the scientific foundations of military surgery, outlined ways to solve many organizational issues of military medicine and reformed the training of doctors in the country.

In 1857 the president of academy P.A. Dubovitski created the department of gynecology, psychiatry, ophthalmology, operative surgery, pediatrics, otolaryngology, and others. He created The medical institution, which became the prototype of postgraduate education and established academy for Special medical education course for nurses, which was first in Russia.  During 1910-1911 the graduates and students of the Academy participated in the liquidation of the Manchurian plague. In 1920 the Academy created special medical assistant course committed to the middle and junior medical staff. After World War II, Academy employee made a great contribution to the compilation of the accumulated materials and data during the war. In the 1950s a number of scientists who worked during war times years, gained international recognition and awarded by high state awards. In 1998 the Academy became the most valuable objects of cultural heritage for the peoples of the Russian Federation. Currently Naval Academy of Medicine has 94 departments and 970 skilled teachers. Till now Naval Academy of Medicine has trained 3700 professionals.
