The need for the creation of a higher medical educational institution in Yaroslavl was dictated by the Great Patriotic War, which required a multiple increase in medical personnel. In 1943 the Belarusian Medical Institute, formed from the evacuated Minsk and Vitebsk medical institutes, resumed its activity in Yaroslavl. After the liberation of the western regions of the country, the university returned to its republic, and on August 15, 1944 the Yaroslavl Medical Institute was opened. In the year of its 50th anniversary (in 1994) the university received the status of an academy, and in the year of the 70th anniversary (in 2014) – the status of the university. During its activity, the university has trained more than 30,000 doctors and pharmacists, including those in Asia, Africa and America. More than 48 thousand doctors, pharmacists and teachers passed various forms of professional retraining and advanced training. Graduates of the university successfully work in different regions of Russia, as well as in the states of near and far abroad. Among the graduates there are famous scientists, heads of public health services, authoritative experts of many branches of medicine, prominent public figures. Education of foreign students both on budget (governmental) and contract basis was started by YSMU in 1992. The Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University also known informally as NovSU, was founded in 1993 by merging the two oldest higher education institutions of Veliky Novgorod: the Pedagogical and Polytechnic Institutes. Later, Novgorod Agricultural Academy was included into the structure of the University. At present it comprises seven Institutes and four Colleges of secondary vocational education. It is unusual that the Novgorod State University would have the name of Prince Yaroslav the Wise incorporated into its title.
