Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine, USA

The Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine is a private, non-profit medical school for osteopathic medicine located in the city of Dothan in the U.S. state of Alabama. It is the first osteopathic medical school in the stateand is believed to be the first osteopathic medical school in the nation established by a regional not-for-profit hospital.

On April 24, 2017, the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), awarded ACOM full accreditation status. Graduates of the college receive a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (D.O.).The first class began study on 5 August 2013, and graduated on 13 May 2017.

By the early 1990s, leaders in Alabama had come to recognize the growing need for primary care physicians within the state. Having recognized the propensity for osteopathic medical graduates to pursue careers in primary care, state leaders established the Alabama Medical Education Consortium (AMEC) in 2005 as a means of attracting third and fourth year medical students to rotations within the state.

By 2010, the success of the AMEC pipeline led some to consider the development of Alabama’s own osteopathic medical college. After much deliberation about the location and structure of the school, the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) was established in May 2010 through the partnership of AMEC and the Houston County Healthcare Authority.

The mission of ACOM is to provide quality, learner-centered osteopathic education, research, and service with emphasis on patient-centered primary care to serve the medically underserved areas of Alabama and the nation.

Like many other medical schools in the United States, ACOM students will take basic science classes in the first two years of medical school, and move on to clinical clerkships during their third and fourth years. Twenty students per year complete rotations at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery.

The school is currently aiding in the establishment of residency programs in the state of Alabama.

The medical school offers two dual degrees: a Master of Science in Management (MSM) Program and a Masters in Business Administration.  Both are offered via Troy University at Dothan.

The Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) is a comprehensive, four-year osteopathic medical college located in Dothan, Alabama. ACOM, the academic division of the Houston County Health Care Authority, is affiliated with Southeast Alabama Medical Center (SAMC) in Dothan, a 420-bed regional medical center. SAMC serves more than 600,000 residents in a 75-mile radius and has more than 2,500 employees and an active medical staff of 300.

ACOM, one of 29 osteopathic colleges in the nation, is the first osteopathic college to open in Alabama and the first osteopathic college in the nation to share a campus with a regional medical center. ACOM’s groundbreaking took place in January 2012, and the 15-month construction project was completed in May 2013. The college celebrated its historic grand opening on July 29, 2013, with more than 1,500

people in attendance to celebrate the event. ACOM’s inaugural class of 162 students began classes on August 5, 2013, and will graduate in 2017.

This educational infrastructure continues to expand and now includes over 400 Alabama physicians from communities throughout the state and 47 hospitals that include 15 core teaching sites and 42 educational sites.

ACOM received its Private School licensure from the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education in December 2011, and provisional accreditation with the ability to recruit students from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation on July 1, 2012. ACOM is building a free-standing facility in Dothan. Construction was completed in May 2013, and the college celebrated its historic grand opening on July 29, 2013. ACOM’s inaugural class began classes on August 5, 2013, and will graduate in 2017.
