Zamboanga Medical School Foundation, Philippines

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University  is a Catholic and Jesuit university in Western Mindanao. AdZU began in 1912 as Escuela Catolica, a parochial school run by Spanish Jesuits. It is the second oldest Jesuit school in the Philippines and the second Jesuit school to be named Ateneo. It initially offered primary and secondary education for boys. It became a college in 1952 and a university in August 2001. It operates on two campuses, La Purisima Street with the tertiary and senior high school divisions and Barangay Tumaga, outside Zamboanga Cityproper, with the junior high school and grade school divisions. AdZU operates two campuses. The main campus (4.3 hectares) on La Purisima Street, named for Fr. Eusebio Salvador, S.J., houses the undergraduate and graduate schools and the senior high school. The new campus (8.3 hectares) in Barangay Tumaga, which is outside Zamboanga City proper, named for Fr. William Kreutz, S.J., is home to the junior high school and grade school. The name Ateneo is the Spanish form of Athenæum, which the Dictionary of Classical Antiquities defines as the name of “the first educational institution in Rome” where “rhetoricians and poets held their recitations.” Hadrian’s school drew its name from a Greek temple dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The said temple, according to the Encyclopædia Britannica, was where “poets and men of learning were accustomed to meet and read their productions.” Athenæum is also used in reference to schools and literary clubs. The closest English translation is academy, referring to institutions of secondary learning. The Society of Jesus has established 16 schools all over the Philippines since 1590 and named nine of them Ateneo. Ateneo de Zamboanga was the second school named Ateneo in 1916. Over the years, the name “Ateneo” has been recognized as the official title of Jesuit institutions of higher learning in the Philippines and synonymous with academic excellence. The college varsity teams, men and women, compete in the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA), and the grade school and high school varsity teams, boys and girls, participate in the Private Schools of Zamboanga City Athletic Association (PSZCAA). AdZU holds a school-wide annual sportsfest called “Ateneo Fiesta,” a week-long event beginning in the last week of November. Most competitors, high school and college, are varsity athletes preparing for competition in sports events on the PRISAA agenda. After receiving a five-year Level III Accreditation for the Arts and Sciences, Education, Business and Accountancy, and Nursing programs in May 2014, AdZU requested Institutional Accreditation, an evaluation process that looks at the overall quality of the school. On September 2014, the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) granted Institutional Accreditation to Ateneo de Zamboanga. The University has also been declared by the Commission on Higher Education as a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Teacher Education and a Center of Development (CoD) in Information Technology. On May 2017, the Junior High School was conferred a Level III accreditation status from PAASCU accreditors. Xavier University, Philippines

Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan was founded in 1933 by Fr James TG Hayes SJ, Superior of the Philippine Jesuit mission and first Bishop and Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro. In the next 11 years, the two-storey wooden building along Burgos Street that schooled 17 high school male students mushroomed into several buildings on Corrales Avenue with 614 students. This studentry came from the existing high school, from the college department that was added in 1938 with course offerings in Liberal Arts, Education, and Commerce, and from the Grade School established in 1940. All these were brought to the ground during the outbreak of World War II which forced it to close on December 9, 1941. The chemistry laboratory was at first used to extract quinine for the government forces. Later on, the campus was used as the Northern Mindanao headquarters of the Japanese troops after they entered Cagayan de Oro on May 2, 1942. Soon after Cagayan de Oro was freed from Japanese forces, the school was reduced to rubble when on September 9, 1944 American planes began bombing Cagayan de Oro. “Those liberators wrecked the town of Cagayan and its wharves. When the day was over the old transit showed our college in ruins, the century old cathedral gone, and the lovely house of the Bishop a heap of concrete,” wrote Fr Edward Haggerty SJ, then Rector of Ateneo de Cagayan. His successor Fr Andrew F Cervini SJ saw to the reconstruction of the school. Through their efforts and with the assistance of local and foreign benefactors, the school reopened in 1946 with the usual classes held in partially restored buildings. By 1946, collegiate program offerings included Bachelor of Arts, Pre-Legal, and Commerce. The Graduate School was opened in 1948. The College of Agriculture was started by Fr William F Masterson SJ in 1953, and the College of Law and the Manresa Farm in 1955. In March 1958, two years after Fr Francisco Araneta SJ became Rector, Ateneo de Cagayan was granted the university status, It was on August 27, 1958, that Ateneo de Cagayan was inaugurated as a university and was, thenceforth, called Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, in honor of St Francis Xavier, Jesuit missionary to the Indies and companion of St Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. Xavier University became the first university in Mindanao and the first Jesuit university in the Philippines. Fr Francisco Araneta SJ further explained that the change of name “merely crystallized an old spirit that always had been the soul of all Ateneo schools, the spirit of learning and service, the spirit of purposeful scholarship.” The Dr Jose P Rizal School of Medicine is housed in a five-storey building located at the east side of Xavier University campus. It offers health care to the community with 35 beds and by seeing about 450 out-patients per day. The Medical Library with 5,000 volumes and 256 journals is the Mindanao repository for World Health Organization publications. Founded in 1983, the medical school has Level 1 Accredited Status from the Commission on Higher Education as a Center of Development in Medical Education, and was recognized by the Professional Regulations Commission and the Board of Medicine for having ranked second in the national Physician Licensure Examination over 11 consecutive years. The school was chosen by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development as a satellite medical institution for its project on the development of research capabilities. In collaboration with the XU Community Health Care Center, the school was the pilot site in Mindanao for the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network Program in 2008. The research division also offers consultative services on ethical issues. Ateneo de Zamboanga University College of Medicine, Philippines

The Ateneo de Zamboanga began in 1912 as Escuela Catolica, a parochial school run by Spanish Jesuits at the old site of the Immaculate Conception Church, right across the Sunken Garden. Fr. Manuel M. Sauras, S.J. was the first director. In 1916, the Escuela Catolica became the Ateneo de Zamboanga. In 1930, the American Jesuits took over from the Spanish Jesuits with Fr. Thomas Murray, S.J. as the first American director. Classes were also held in the Knights of Columbus (K of C) buildng, now the site City Theater. The first high school students graduated from Ateneo in 1932. In 1938, a library was built on the first floor of the K of C Building. A facade, an auditorium, and an annex were also built. John Shinn was appointed headmaster of the Grade School and Fr. Francis Clark, S.J. became the principal and dean of discipline of the High School. The school was closed during World War II. It was used by the Japanese as a public elementary school until it was shelled and bombed by the American forces on March 8 and 9 in 1945, prior to the liberation of the city. The high school reopened in 1947, with a nipa-sawali building on a new site outside the poblacion called Jardin de Chino along Camino Nuevo. It was providential that shortly before the outbreak of the World War II, Fr. Eusebio Salvador, S.J. had bought 18 adjoining lots in that section. In 1948, the school was officially recognized as a Jesuit school separate from the parish. The post liberation years were a period of rapid physical, curricular, and enrollment expansion for the school. A college was established in 1952 and the graduate school in 1976. In the 1980s Fr. Ernesto A. Carretero, SJ started the work to acquire for the Ateneo de Zamboanga a university status. The efforts were continued by when Fr. William H. Kreutz, SJ came as president in 1989. The years of hard work finally paid off when, on August 20, 2001, the Ateneo de Zamboanga was declared a university by the Commission on Higher Education. It operates on two campuses, La Purisima Street with the tertiary and senior high school divisions and Barangay Tumaga, outside Zamboanga City proper, with the junior high school and grade school divisions. Cagayan State University Tuguegarao (Carig), Philippines

As representative of the Province of Cagayan in the Interim Batasang Pambansa, then Minister (later Senate President) Juan Ponce Enrile drafted the Charter of the Cagayan State University that was signed into law as Presidential Decree No. 1436 by President Ferdinand E. Marcos on June 11, 1978. Except for provisions on the composition, powers and selection of the members of the governing board, the Charter has since remained unchanged. It certainly was not creation out of nothing. Rather, the Charter consolidated existing post-secondary institutions, converting them into a single legal entity. These were the Cagayan Valley College of Arts and Trades at Tuguegarao, the Northern Luzon State College of Agriculture at Piat, the Aparri Institute of Technology, the Cagayan Valley Agricultural College at Lallo, the Bukig National Agricultural and Technical School in Aparri West, the Sanchez Mira Rural Vocational School, the Western Cagayan School of Arts and Trades at Lasam and the Gonzaga National Agricultural and Technical School. It is this fact that explains the present constellation of campuses of the Cagayan State University: Andrews (Caritan), Piat, Lasam, Lallo, Aparri, Sanchez Mira, and Gonzaga. When the university commenced operations, a site in Carig was developed – to which the Central Administration of the university would later transfer from Caritan. It is the Carig site that has evolved, by Board sufferance, into the Carig Campus, although the Central Administration has since returned to the Andrews Campus at Caritan. While the university was formed from pre-existing institutions that were mainly agricultural and technical, its Charter, Presidential Decree No. 1436, made it exceedingly clear that it was the intendment of the law that the university was to provide “better service in professional and technical training in the arts, sciences, humanities, and technology and in the conduct of scientific research and technological studies”. Without a doubt then and by express legislative mandate, the university was not to be an agricultural, fisheries or technological university – although these remain vital and highly crucial concerns of CSU – but a “comprehensive university”, a university as that term is understood in the academic world! Academics of note were the first university officials, headed by Dr. Manuel Corpus from the University of the Philippines, and Dr. Joselito Jara, who did a doctorate in educational philosophy from the University of Maryland as Vice-President for Academic Affairs. The officials of the pre-existing colleges that were consolidated into the university were designated as “Campus Deans” and continued to supervise their respective campuses. It was a truly enlightened decision of the Board of Regents to authorize the opening of a College of Medicine – the very first in the region, and an agreement with what was then the Cagayan Valley Regional Hospital (now the Cagayan Valley Medical Center) made the latter the training hospital of the College of Medicine. The first dean was a nationally recognized neurologist-psychologist, Dr. Gilberto Gamez of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Santo Tomas. Soon after, other professional courses followed: Medical Technology, Engineering and Liberal Arts courses. Guided by what the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has identified as priority courses of the Region, the university has always offered degree programs in the “hard sciences” – mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology – although, especially in regard to chemistry and physics, these have not been popular programs at all. But CSU now has a competent and highly credible corps of professors in these very disciplines! Dr. Armando Cortes, then Campus Dean of the Aparri Campus, succeeded Dr. Manuel Corpus as University President. At the time, it was the Bureau of Higher Education under the Department of Education, Culture and Sports, that superintended state universities and colleges. Prof. Monserrat Babaran was the Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and together, President Cortes and Prof. Babaran devised a classification and promotion scheme that would subsequently be adopted as a National Compensation Circular, to morph later into what is now National Budget Circular No. 461. Fr. Ranhilio Aquino who then just finished his term as Vice-Dean of the Graduate School of the University of Santo Tomas and was Executive Vice-President of the Lyceum of Aparri for several years, was designated Vice-President for Academic Affairs. He supervised the accreditation of different programs of CSU with the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities of the Philippines and instituted a system for the re-training and “re-tooling” of professors of agriculture and fisheries who no longer had enough students to teach, to enable them to teach subjects of their interest. Some programs of the university were awarded Center of Excellence status, others, Center of Development, aside from higher levels of accreditation. The Board of Regents authorized the operation of a College of Law, offering the degree Bachelor of Laws, the second law school to open in Tuguegarao City – in fact, in Cagayan. After President Cortes, Dr. Eleuterio de Leon was designated by then Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chair Esther Garcia as OIC, Office of the President, a position he held for three years. It was then that authority was bestowed on Campus Executive Officers who were tasked to manage their campuses in behalf of the Central Administration. The College of Medicine earned recognition as the 10th leading school of medicine in the Philippines owing to creditable performance in the licensure examination. It was quite a feat! Quality medical education was available in the province at the astoundingly low cost of hardly over than twenty-five thousand per semester. The Graduate School was recognized and respected. Leaders and executives of higher education institutions in the region trooped to CSU, to earn their advanced degrees. Law flourished as well under the deanship of Attorney Leticia Aquino who upped Bar passing levels and obtained authority from the Legal Education Board to offer the degree Juris Doctor. Dr. Roger Perez, who had been CHED Executive Director, was appointed as the next University President, and immediately he set himself to work on giving the university a much-needed face-lift. The Andrews Campus was transformed – given … Read more
