International American University College of Medicine, St.Lucia

International American University was founded in October 2003 in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia by an act of the Parliament of the Government of Saint Lucia. On February 1, 2004, with only nine students and five departments, classes began. IAU Students come from all across the United States and around the globe, including Canada, India, Nigeria, United States, United Kingdom, West Indies, and Zambia, to experience a truly personalized medical education. At the invitation of the Government of Saint Lucia, the founding members of IAU established the College as a direct response to the needs and aspirations of American pre-medical students wanting to serve the U.S. Health Care system. The founding dean of the University, Paul Cherian, MD, developed an innovative curriculum, aimed at developing students’ knowledge of the basic sciences as well as enhancing their problem solving skills through a problem based learning curriculum. He led the founding faculty in delivering a student centered curriculum which continues to be the cornerstone of the University’s success. John Minarcik, MD, was one of the initial faculty members recruited to teach at IAU, and continues to serve on the faculty to this day. Also, Olusina Adesanya, MD, the founding faculty member in Clinical Medicine also continues to serve on the faculty of IAU to this day. All of the founding faculty members had been educated either in the United States, Canada, Europe, and commonwealth countries and their broad range of experience led to the delivery of a student centered pedagogy aimed at graduating humble and skillful physicians. Over the years, faculty from the Philippines, Canada, Nigeria, and the United States, have joined the growing IAU community. The people of Saint Lucia are friendly, welcoming, and always willing to help. Saint Lucia has one of the lowest crime rates in all of the Caribbean and Vieux Fort is a quiet, small town where there are rarely any problems with crime. The University is located three buildings from the police station in case of any emergencies. There is also security on campus during hours of operation. Students who exercise caution and common sense should not have any problems with crime in Saint Lucia. Students have several options for communicating both locally and internationally. Since internet access is widely available, most students use some type of internet-based phone for international calls such as Skype, Magic Jack, or Vonage. It is recommended that all students have a local cell phone while living in St. Lucia. Digicel and Lime are the two major cell phone providers in Saint Lucia. IAU Students are provided with a pre-paid Digicel SIM card upon arrival in Saint Lucia for a minimal cost. Any “unlocked” cell phone from the US or Canada which holds a SIM card can be used in Saint Lucia. Students wishing to use an “unlocked” cell phone should contact their cell phone provider to get details on how to unlock their phone before arrival in Saint Lucia. Local cell phones are also available for purchase on the island for $40 and up. There are several bank branches near the campus. The closest bank is Scotiabank which is located directly across the street. Bank of America or Scotiabank customers can use their ATM cards at Scotiabank ATMs with no service charges.  This is the best option for banking in Saint Lucia and will reduce the amount of cash you need to bring with you.  If you do not have a Bank of America or Scotiabank account you can open an account before leaving for the island. Super J’s is the major grocery store in Saint Lucia. There are two large grocery stores in Vieux Fort, one is located adjacent to the campus and the other is near student housing. Grocery stores carry local as well as US brands of most items and prices are generally comparable to US prices. Some specialty items may have slightly higher prices. All grocery stores have fresh meat, produce, bread, and dairy products as well as all other main essentials including toiletries and cleaning supplies. The University is located adjacent to a local mall with a variety of goods including clothing, shoes, books, pharmaceuticals, electronics, housewares, and appliances. There are also several other shopping areas and malls around the island. International American University is dedicated to becoming a global hub of learning through its innovative and distinct approach in providing quality medical education. IAU capitalizes on its faculty’s combined knowledge, wealth of experience and it’s state-of-the-art training facilities to create a framework of knowledge, unique to the University, setting the trend for the region. As an IAU student, we guarantee the satisfaction of each of the various “levels” of credentials necessary for U.S., Canadian & International Licensure. IAU is chartered and accredited by the Government of Saint Lucia as a comprehensive university with the authority to confer the Doctor of Medicine degree. The Departments of Education and Health of St. Lucia approved the eligibility of IAU College of Medicine graduates to practice medicine in St. Lucia. Having many student organizations, IAU provides a wide range of opportunities for students to get involved. Student organizations have a significant impact in providing effective learning environments for students, preparing them to live in a multicultural society and work in a global community. In addition to building lasting friendships, student organizations provide many benefits including serving as a medium for academic discourse, personal growth, leadership development, intercultural understanding, and community service. Moreover, research suggests that involved students tend to perform better academically and are more likely to graduate when compared with their non-involved peers. The Student Government Association is responsible for many of the events and activities that are planned for the student body. SGA officers work closely with the Dean of Student Affairs to help coordinate and plan events throughout the semester. These events include: Hoop it Up Basketball Tournament and Health Screening, IAU Blood Drive, Multicultural Dinner, Fashion Show, Welcome Dinner for new students, and various trips around Saint Lucia.

International University of Health Sciences, Saint Kitts

International University of the Health Sciences (IUHS) is an offshore private medical school located in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.  It opened in 1998 with headquarters in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and its campus located in Basseterre. The school is accredited by the government of St. Kitts & Nevis, listed in the World Health Organisation (WHO) World directory of medical schools. Programs are open to both Kittian/Nevisian and foreign students and both MBBS and Doctor of Medicine degrees are available. For students who have not attained the prerequisite undergraduate degree for entrance to medical school, the school offers an MBBS track which provides students with 90 credit hours of basic medical curriculum including Biology with lab, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry with lab, Mathematics and Physics.  Because criteria vary from nation to nation, students who have earned college level credit previously, should submit those credits for review at application to confirm their applicability to IUHS’s academic requirements. The school curriculum is based upon the US model, requiring four years of study including both Medical Science Program of study followed by clinical practicum. Completion of the coursework results in a Doctor of Medicine degree. The International University of the Health Sciences was chartered and licensed in Saint Kitts and Nevis and approved by the country’s accreditation process. It is listed in the FAIMER International Medical Education Directory (IMED) effective in 1998.  By virtue of its listing in IMED, students graduating from IUHS are authorized to take part in the United States Medical Licensing Examination three-part examinations. Ross University School of Medicine, Dominica

Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) is a private international medical school in Portsmouth, Dominica. It was founded in 1978, with its main campus located in the Commonwealth of Dominica, and separate administrative bases in Iselin, New Jersey and Miramar, Florida in the United States. It is owned by Adtalem Global Education Inc., formerly DeVry Education Group, which purchased it in 2003. The medical school was founded in 1978 as The University of Dominica School of Medicine by Robert Ross, an entrepreneur. At the time, it was housed in leased facilities at The Castaways Hotel, with an inaugural class of 11 students. In 1982, the University  of Dominica School of Medicine formally changed its name to Ross University School of Medicine at the request of the government of Dominica. In October 2017, the university announced that classes for the fall semester would resume mid-October aboard the GNV Excellent, an Italian ferry that would be docked off the coast of the island of St. Kitts. The ship was reconfigured as an educational venue. In November 2017, Ross University School of Medicine announced plans to relocate temporarily to Knoxville, Tenn. for continuation of medical school classes. Lincoln Memorial University (LMU), based in Harrogate and with operations in Knoxville, will provide the necessary operational capacity and the technical capabilities to support RUSM faculty, students, and staff. The Ross University School of Medicine pre-clinical campus is located in Portsmouth, Dominica. The campus features a medical and anatomical imaging laboratory, a simulation center, and classrooms equipped with several plasma screens and projection equipment. In May 2015, Ross officially opened a new Student Center, a 50,000 square foot facility housing a new library, student study spaces, student services departments, and other spaces. The cost of the project was estimated at $18 million.  The building itself is designed to withstand category five hurricanes. The university accepts students for three different entering classes per year: September, January and May. The fall entering class is typically the largest each year. Since September 2010, the university has followed an organ systems-based curriculum for its basic sciences.  This is divided into two different tracks, known as “Accelerated Curriculum” and “Curriculum” as of May 2013. The accelerated curriculum track covers the basic sciences in 60 weeks of study (four semesters), while the Curriculum track covers the same material in 75 weeks (five semesters) with integrated study breaks. Both tracks share identical first semesters, allowing students more time to decide on the track they wish to pursue. Unlike many American medical schools, Ross University does not own or affiliate with any particular primary teaching hospital. The university contracts with hospitals throughout the U.S. to accept and place students in clinical rotations.  The Bakersfield Californian reported that Ross and Kern County in California agreed to a $35 million deal to enable Ross students to complete clinical rotations at Kern Medical Center. Upon completion of the curriculum, similar to that of U.S. medical schools, students must pass the USMLE Step 2 CS and USMLE Step 2 CK, prior to graduation. According to the National Resident Match Program (NRMP), 595 medical students from Dominica, out of a total of 1100 students who applied for 2013, matched into their preferred residency specialty, a match rate of 55% to their first ranked specialty. In 2013 94% of fourth-year MD U.S. students earned a first-year match.  However, the university, which considers all students that matched into any residency program on their first attempt, reported a match rate of 88% in 2015. In 2016, the university reported a residency match rate of 86% among first-time eligible applicants. According to the US Department of Education, 70% of students completed the program on time in 2016 with a mean combined loan debt of $268,134.00 for U.S. borrowers. The first time pass rate for USMLE 1 has dropped from 63% to 47% since 2010. Ross University School of Medicine uses electronic books (eBooks) for all of their semesters in Foundations of Medicine. Students are charged for the cost of their eBooks within the Educational Resource fee students pay every semester. In addition to the eBooks, the Educational Resource fee also includes additional course materials used throughout the student experience, online study materials, and covers fees required for background checks needed before students participate in clinical training. Ross has developed relationships with the publishers of the books to offer the eBooks at a reduced price. Since opening in 1978, over 13,000 students have graduated from the university and are currently practicing in all 50 states of the U.S., in addition to Canada and other countries as well. Ross students have the opportunity to participate in more than 40 clubs and organizations. No matter where your interest lies, you’re sure to find a group or activity to join—and if not, we encourage you to step up and start a new one. With a student body as diverse and spirited as ours, there’s always something new and interesting going on! During this event, students don white coats—the garment traditionally worn by Doctors of Medicine—recite Ross’ Honor Pledge, and say the Morning Prayer of the Physician in unison. It officially marks your transition from prospective medical school student to physician-in-training. Ceremonies are held for all three incoming classes and are attended by students’ family members and friends, in addition to Ross deans and faculty, university administrators, and local dignitaries.

Spartan Health Sciences University,St. Lucia

Spartan Health Sciences University is a private, for-profit medical school located in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, in the Caribbean. Spartan confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Spartan was established in Saint Lucia on January 7, 1980 as St. Lucia Health Sciences University. The first campus was located in Castries,  the capital city. In November 1983, the school was renamed Spartan Health Sciences University and relocated to Vieux Fort. The MD program at Spartan is a 10 semester course of study that consists of three semesters per calendar year. Semesters 1-5 are completed at the Saint Lucia campus; semesters 6-10 consist of 80 weeks of clinical study that are completed at teaching hospitals approved by the university. In addition to the medical program Spartan also has a school of nursing. The nursing program was chartered by The Government of St Lucia and is licensed the University. It is also accredited by the Monitoring Committee appointed by the Government of St. Lucia to ensure that standards are comparable to those set by the Liaison Committee of Medical Education as required by the Department of Education in the United States. A school of veterinary medicine was opened on January 14, 2015 and was developed in collaboration with Techmedics Inc. Spartan’s Health Fair is a free health screening event, open to the local community of St. Lucia. The event is held few times per semester and is put together by members of the AMSA (American Medical Students Association). Numerous students and faculty members participate in these health and prevention efforts. This is the official farewell ceremony for our students (out-going fifth trimester students) who have completed the basic sciences program. The ceremony usually takes place at one of the Luxurious hotels or resorts on the Island. It begins with an official ceremony, which is followed by a buffet dinner. The out-going students also get the opportunity to spend that night at the hotel/resort. Invited guests to this ceremony include, parents and friends of the outgoing students, prominent individuals from the private sector, and government officials. The cultural diversity of Spartan Medical School adds up to its uniqueness. This is particularly observed every trimester during an on-campus major school event called “The Taste of Spartan”. It exemplifies our differences in culture and shows the family bond we have achieved over the past thirty three (33) years, and the harmony in which we coexist during our pursuit of professional careers. The event shows how our efforts as a group surpass our individual undertaking. During this event, students, staff, faculty, and their family members showcase their talents in either cooking, or performing on stage in their respective traditional attires. It is a night of varieties of food and entertainment. The cultural outfits represent countries from Africa to Europe, from America to Asia, and the Caribbea The White Coat Ceremony is an esteemed event for the incoming trimester whereupon there is an “invitation” into the Spartan Health Sciences University family and the medical field. Those in attendance come to honor and welcome first trimester students to Spartan, consisting of both returning students and faculty. The ceremony is followed by a delicious meal that is frequently followed by an “after” party. In the United Kingdom, the General Medical Council has listed Spartan as an institution whose graduates (who started their course of study on or before December 31, 2008) are ineligible for licensure.

St. Georges University, Grenada

A handful of dreamers set out to change the status quo in medical education in the 1970s and founded an international University that has educated more than 17,000 people worldwide…and impacted the word by the many thousands more who have benefitted from their knowledge and care. Their vision of what international education should be attracted progressive education leaders with prestigious credential to shape the future of the young school. The result of their shared dream was St. George’s University. It began on July 23, 1976, when Charles Modica, Louis Modica, Edward McGowan, and Patrick F. Adams witnessed the birth of their dream through an act of Grenada’s Parliament, establishing St. George’s University School of Medicine. It opened its doors in January 1977, welcoming a modest group of students to Grand Anse as part of its charter class. They were the first of many, the University having produced over 14,000 physicians who have gone on to practice in all 50 US states and more than 50 countries worldwide. What was an opportunity for the charter class has developed into the opportunity for many. The Doctor of Medicine program at St. George’s University School of Medicine has been accredited and approved by many external bodies, such as the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), the Government of Grenada, and medical boards throughout the United States. SGU students now have access to clinical training opportunities at over 70 affiliated hospitals and clinical centers in the United States, Canada, Grenada, and United Kingdom, and annually secure highly competitive US-based residencies, with SGU serving as the number one provider of doctors into first-year positions in the US over the last six years combined, including more than 870 in 2016 alone. St. George’s University expanded its medical program even further in 2005, this time overseas, establishing the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program, which allows School of Medicine students to spend their first year of basic sciences at Northumbria University in Newcastle, United Kingdom. With it, these students obtain unprecedented international experience in medicine, gaining exposure to models of medicine in three different countries by the time they graduate. In addition to basic science training, students have been able to carry out short- and long-term, multidisciplinary research and education programs with the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation (WINDREF), which the University established in True Blue in 1994. After forty years of producing doctors around the world. SGU doctors have had a profound effect on medical care in the United States—as well as Grenada, Botswana, Trinidad and Tobago, and other countries around the world. In the US alone, SGU graduates have been procuring residencies in a growing rate over the past four years. In 2017, SGU students and graduates have obtained a record number of residency placements with over 900 US residencies secured. This past year our eligible 2017 US graduates had a 93% US postgraduate placement rate for those that applied for a US residency. The Grenadian community has proudly embraced the University and its students. For 40 years, students and community members have lived in peace, with a mutual respect that is genuine and admired. In turn, SGU has been a vital contributor to the island through both financial and humanitarian means. SGU is proud that its students, graduates, and faculty are dedicated to improving the lives of both old and young on the island. Students are captivated by the unique blend of African, English and French cultures of Grenada. They can immerse themselves in Grenada’s rich history, dining at a local restaurant in the picturesque capital of St. George’s, as native music fills the air. Though many languages are spoken, English is the national language. Sports and recreation are an essential part of St. George’s University and campus life. Students take full advantage of the tropical climate, participating in outdoor activities such as snorkeling, swimming, and scuba diving in their free time. In addition, the Athletics, Sports, and Recreational Department has created a healthy atmosphere for students to exercise their minds and bodies. Located on the ground floor of the Student Center Building, the air-conditioned SGU Gym is divided into a Weight Room and Cardio Room. The Weight Room has a wide range of free weights and weight machines, while the Cardio Room features spinners, elliptical machines, treadmills, as well as other cardio and audio/visual equipment. There are numerous ways to work up a sweat, to unwind, to reset, or to otherwise put yourself in the right state of mind to excel in your studies. That can be accomplished individually or through the numerous fitness classes organized in the SGU gym. They range from aerobics and kickboxing to dance, martial arts, and yoga. Many classes are also held outdoors, including on the second floor of Modica Hall, at which you can peer out toward the Caribbean Sea, or on the beach. The playing field on lower campus is outfitted for recreational CrossFit training and jogging/running. St. George’s University student organizations are centered on different areas of student life: cultural, religious, social, academic, professional, and community service. The Office of the Dean of Students, cognizant of the benefits of active student involvement, offers support for over 65 student organizations in Grenada, and for students in clinical rotations. Students seeking additional information on organizations and student associations that support the following categories may contact the Office of the Dean of Students. St. George’s University provides a well-rounded experience for its students, including by offering a wealth of research opportunities on campus. Our unique location and variety of dual degree programs provide unique research opportunities in areas such as medical public health, anthropology, ecology, marine and terrestrial biology, ethics, and more.  Additionally, One Health One Medicine, the convergence of human, animal, and ecosystem health, is of particular interest on our unique campus which is home to both a medical and veterinary medical school.

In its more than 60 years of existence, UWI has evolved from a fledgling college in the Caribbean island of Jamaica with 33 students to a full-fledged University with over 45,000 students, approximately 9000 graduates annually and more than 120,000 alumni. In 1960 The UWI’s second campus at St. Augustine was born out of a merger between the University College and the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (IATA) in the island of Trinidad.
