University of Perpetual Help System Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical University, Philippines

The University of Perpetual Help System prides itself for its commitment to providing quality service in not one but two important undertaking: education and health care. Founded in 1976 by the late Dr. Jose De Guzman Tamayo and Dr. Josefina Laperal Tamayo, the UPH continues to pave the way towards quality education and healthcare service.

Until the 1970’s, advances in medical care in the Philippines were focused mainly in a few major urban areas. The majority of the rural communities were left either with little to no manpower resources and facilities. Recognizing the severity of the problem, Dr. Jose G. Tamayo founded the Perpetual Help Education & Health Care Institutions, which became one of the forerunners in the decentralization of the Philippine Medical Education and Health Care delivery systems.

The Perpetual Help System began in 1952 with the establishment of the Perpetual Help Clinic in Sampaloc, Manila.  After 14 years, a bigger, better Perpetual Help Hospital, located at the corners of V. Concepcion and Laong-Laan Streets in Manila, opened its doors to provide health care to a larger segment of the community.  The founders, however, wanted to serve not just health care clients; they recognized a growing need for adequate training to those who were tasked in administering health care. Thus, the birth of the Perpetual Help School of Nursing in 1968, also in Manila.

On January 10, 1993, a top-level meeting of the Board of Trustees and Directors of the University of Perpetual Help System was convened to pursue a comprehensive and integrated corporate planning process in its bid to apply for a University status.

After three years of visitation, evaluation, improvement, and verification, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted University Status to the University of Perpetual Help System with campuses in Las Piñas, Laguna and UPH-DJGT Medical University. The University of Perpetual Help System thus has the distinction of being the first University System created by CHED.

In ceremonies held at the UPHS Performing Arts Theatre in Biñan, Laguna on April 20, 1997, CHED (Director) Amelia Biglete presented the charter granting the University of Perpetual Help System its University Status to Dr. Jose G. Tamayo. The activity was dedicated to the pioneering spirit of the late Dr. Josefina Laperal Tamayo on her natal day.

The UPH-DJGTMU Library is located at the 4th floor of Dr. Jose G. Tamayo Medical Building. We support the mission and vision of the University by providing academic resources vital to liberal education, by teaching research skills, and promoting information literacy necessary for lifelong learning.  We aim to serve as a hub of information and recognize our role as instruments of teaching and research in the academy.  We are a fundamental part of the University community committed to providing users with comprehensive resources and services as tools for independent critical thinking and life-long learning.
