Since its founding in 1868, the Technical University of Munich sees itself as a servant of an increasingly technical society. TUM’s academic faculties are divided amongst three campuses in the greater Munich area. The Main Campus in central Munich houses the faculties of Architecture, Medicine, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Civil Engineering, Surveying, Economics, Social and Sports Sciences. A second large campus is located in Garching, about 10 km north of Munich. Garching is home to the faculties of Physics, Chemistry, Informatics, Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering, as well as the Garching research reactor. Over the years, several research institutes, including the Max-Planck Society, the Bavarian Academy of Science and the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität of Munich have joined TUM in Garching. The third TUM campus is located 35 km north of Munich in Weihenstephan, Freising, and is home to the faculties of Biology, Agricultural Science and Horticulture, Forestry and Resource Management, Brewing and Food Technology, Nutrition, and Landscape Planning and Landscape Architecture. There are also many institutions throughout Munich and the surrounding area that belong to TUM. These include the hospital Rechts der Isar, used for training medical students, and the Central University Athletic Complex. The College of Professors of the Technical University of Munich has a total of 788 members. The 540 professors represent the core subjects of the 14 faculties. Specific practical aspects of the training are represented by honorary professorships.They stand for a largely unrivaled portfolio of subjects with a focus on natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medicine. With over 2 million printed and electronic media, 400,000 loans, over 10 million full-text downloads and 1.83 million library visitors a year, the University Library is TUM’s scientific information center. The University Library consists of nine sub-libraries in Munich, Garching, Weihenstephan and Straubing. The University Library and all sub-libraries are under the central direction of the Library Directorate .They  offer extensive literature and access to information from the fields of science and technology, architecture, engineering, educational research and education as well as nutrition, land use and the environment. The business processes of the University Library and its associated sub-libraries are coordinated by the five central departments of User Services , Information Services , Media Editing , Library Technology & IT Services, and System Analysis & Implementation . TUM School of Medicine, together with the university hospital, is one of the strongest medical research locations in Germany and its successes are internationally highly regarded. Medicine is one of the major areas that contribute to the TUM portfolio and is central for its further development. Students can complete their clinical study at TUM School of Medicine after a pre-clinic training phase jointly run with the Medical School of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. The interdisciplinary courses are based on the subject-focused curriculum „mediTUM“. Besides, TUM School of Medicine offers several doctoral programs for both medical students/physicians and natural scientists, such as the PhD program „Medical Life Science and Technology“. The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) was founded in 1933. It is one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). The ABP is an independent and nonprofit organization whose certificate is recognized throughout the world as a credential signifying a high level of physician competence. In 1933, the American Pediatric Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Medical Association formed the American Board of Pediatrics for the purpose of examining and awarding certification to physicians who have superior knowledge in the field of the diseases of childhood. The Board of Directors of the ABP consists of distinguished pediatricians in education, research, and clinical practice, as well as one or more nonphysicians who have a professional interest in the health and welfare of children and adolescents. The ABP strives to improve training, establishes the requirements for certification, and sets the standards for its examinations. Certification by the ABP has one objective — to promote excellence in medical care for children and adolescents. Certification represents dedication to the highest level of professionalism in patient care. ABP certification provides a standard of excellence by which the public can select pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists. Although ABP certification is voluntary, nearly all qualified pediatricians seek this recognition. The ABP awards certificates in General Pediatrics and in the following subspecialty areas: Adolescent Medicine, Cardiology, Critical Care Medicine, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology-Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, and Child Abuse Pediatrics. Pediatricians practice the specialty of medical science concerned with the physical, emotional, and social health of children from birth to young adulthood. Pediatric care encompasses a broad spectrum of health services ranging from preventive health care to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. Pediatricians understand the many factors that affect the growth and development of children. They understand that children are not simply small adults. Children change rapidly, and they must be approached with an appreciation for their stage of physical and mental development. The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) certifies general pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists based on standards of excellence that lead to high quality health care during infancy, childhood, adolescence, and the transition into adulthood. The ABP certification provides assurance to the public that a general pediatrician or pediatric subspecialist has successfully completed accredited training and fulfills the continuous evaluation requirements that encompass the six core competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice. The ABP’s quest for excellence is evidenced in its rigorous evaluation process and in new initiatives undertaken that not only continually improve the standards of its certification but also advance the science, education, study, and practice of pediatrics.
