Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Viet Nam

On 31 March 1966, Cần Thơ University (Viện Đại học Cần Thơ) was established by the government of the Republic of Vietnam. The original university included four faculties: Sciences, Law and Social Sciences, Letters and Pedagogy. After the Fall of Saigon, the university developed into a comprehensive university for the Mekong Delta region with several faculties added. In 2003, the Faculty of Medicine split to form the Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Can Tho University (CTU), an important state higher education institution in the Mekong Delta, is the cultural, scientific and technical center of the Delta. Since its founding in 1966, CTU has been improving and developing itself. It has an enrolment of more than 45,000 students. Every year CTU receives intership students from the U.S, Belgium, Japan and others, or under agreements between their universities and CTU. At present, the total number of CTU staff is around 2,000, including 1,203 lecturers (233 PhDs and 653 Masters, constituting to 73.6% of staff members with postgraduate degrees). The current training capacity of CTU is more than 45,000 students involving full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students, part-time as well as distance-learning students. CTU possesses 87 training programs and branches of undergraduate including 2 advanced training programs in English, 33 Master training programs and 11 PhD ones, together with 2 training programs of junior college. The main missions are training, conducting scientific research, and transferring technology to serve the regional and national socio-economic development. In addition to its training responsibilities, CTU has actively taken part in scientific research projects, applying the advances in scientific and technological knowledge to solving problems related to science, technology, economics, culture and society in the region. From achievements in its scientific research and international cooperation projects, the university has developed a variety of products and technological production processes that benefit people’s lives and promote export, thus helping the university gain prestige in national and international markets. The university has established scientific and technological cooperation with many international organizations, universities, and research institutes. As a result of these cooperative projects, the staff’s administrative capabilities and specializations have been upgraded. The facilities, experimental equipment, and scientific materials have also been added. Up to now, Can Tho University (CTU) has 17 unit for academic training (8 colleges, 7 schools, 1 high school, 1 unit for academic training) and many other support departments. Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Viet Nam

Hai Phong Medical University  is a public university established in September 1979 in Hai Phong,  Vietnam. In 2006, the Minister of Health approved the development strategy of Hai Phong Medical University to be the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Hai Phong, adding new faculties: the faculty of pharmacy, the faculty of odonto-stomatology, the faculty of public health and the faculty of nursing, the faculty of medical technology .

Hanoi Medical University, Viet Nam

Hanoi Medical University (HMU) is the oldest university of Vietnam and is located in Hanoi. HMU was founded in 1902 by French during the French colonisation under the name Indochina Medical College. The first headmaster of HMU was  Alexandre  Yersin  who was the co-discoverer of the bacillus responsible for the bubonic plague or pest, which was renamed in his honour   (Yersinia pestis). HMU, originally called Indochina Medical College, was founded in 1902. It was the first modern university in Vietnam, and the second of all universities in Vietnam after the Temple of Literature. It was located in Le  Thanh Tong  street, next to what was then its practice hospital, 108 Hospital. In 1961, Hanoi University of Pharmacy was spun off from HMU and took residence in the old campus. HMU was moved to a newly built campus in its current address in Ton That Tung  street – named after one of its principals, and next to the largest hospital in Hanoi – Bach Mai Hospital. It has also offices in Viet Duc Hospital. HMU is considered the most famous medical university in Vietnam. The exam to enter the university is very competitive. In the past, it was the only medical university that recruited students in all Vietnam. Until now, it has been the only university which did not apply the priority by regions during the national university entrance exam (i.e.: students in rural or difficult regions, who wish to benefit ‘the bonus mark by regions’, must apply in other medical universities).

Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Viet Nam

Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy was founded on March 28, 1957. Before 1975, only 200 medical doctors (MDs) graduated. For the first 50 years, the school has educated and trained more than 9,000 Medical Doctors, Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), and more than 3,000 Post-Graduates.  

Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine, Viet Nam

Pham Ngoc Thach Pham Ngoc Thach (PNT) was established on the basis of the Training Center for Health Staffs in Ho Chi Minh City. HCMC (TTĐTBDCBYT HCMC) on January 08, 2008. Previously, since the establishment in 1989, the General Statistics Office of Health Sciences was assigned as a Medical University of Ho Chi Minh City, so during the development of 20 years, the General Statistics Office of Health Sciences and Humanities in the past and present. Pham Ngoc Thach University has trained 14 courses of more than 1422 general practitioners participating in the city’s medical system, besides, the school has provided more than 8,000 nurses and more than 500 doctors Basic medical care (four-year medical university) provides medical human resources for remote areas of the southern provinces from Da Nang to the south. The school’s products are socially acceptable and highly appreciated, as evidenced by the fact that each year, the University receives the required number of staff from the City’s medical units and central units located in the city. five times the number of doctors and four times the number of graduates. Beside the boat, the College also fostered postgraduate training for thousands of specialists such as diagnostic imaging, anesthesia, nasopharynx … Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine is a public university located in the national education system of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, established by decision of the Prime Minister. The school is under the direct management of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, subject to professional management of the Ministry of Education and Training and under the professional management of the Ministry of Health. At present, the school has 42 faculties with 330 faculty members, including 01 professor, 5 associate professors, 23 doctors, 96 masters, and many specialists level I and II. The school has good facilities located on 2 hectares of land in District 10 Center.With modern lecture halls and modern equipment labs, there are advanced labs such as biological laboratory, biochemistry laboratory – molecular biology laboratory study … and in the near future, with the investment interest of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, many large investment projects will be implemented. The school has a very good practice system consisting of 24 general hospitals – specialized institutes under the City and a complete system of community-based campuses. The university also has good traditions in international relations: Cooperation with France in the FFI training program (in-patient doctorate in France), FMC (Continuing Medical Education), program in cooperation with AUF, a joint program with the Belgian University Development Organization (CUD), a third phase (with a budget of around 1.5 million euros each). The University has also signed cooperation agreements with the University of Liege (Belgium), the University of Mainz (Germany), and has cooperated with many universities around the world. Being aware of its role in providing medical human resources to the city, Pham Ngoc Thach University strives to expand its training scale but still ensure and step by step improve its quality. In the 2 academic years of 2008-2009 and 2009 -2010, the school has increased its enrollment quota from 120 students to 270 students and 380 students per year. The school also started training the type of postgraduate that opened the enrollment of Specialists specializing in Ear, Nose and Throat. Although a young school, Pham Ngoc Thach University will constantly strive to develop into a leading medical university of Vietnam, shorten the distance and catch up with schools in the region. To complete  the work of providing human resources for the city and the country.

Tan Tao University School of Medicine, Viet Nam

Tan Tao University is a private non-profit university in Long An Province, Vietnam. The founder and the main sponsor of TTU is Mme Dang Thi Hoang Yen. Tan Tao is the university using the model of Duke University ,USA and aspires to become the first Vietnamese university with a U.S. style education. Programs at TTU are taught in English. Tay Nguyen University Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, Viet Nam

After 37 years of establishment and development. TNU has trained over 24.500 students, including more than 2000 ethnic minority students. TNU has also trained over 400 master students in Forestry – Agriculture, Biology, Veterinary Science and Parasitology – Entomology, 120 students in General internal medicine and General surgery. Beside, TNU has also cooperated with 8 other universities in Vietnam to conduct training over 1000 master students in Forestry – Agriculture, Medicine, Linguistics, Pedagogy, English, Economics, Information Technology and Education Management. Since 2008-2009, TNU began to train students from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Cambodia. Crop Science, Veterinary Science, Animal Science, Forestry, Experimental Biology, Parasitology – Entomology, General internal medicine,  General surgery, Mathematical analysis and copperation with 8 other Universities for training 30 Master programs.

Vietnam University of Traditional Medicine, Viet Nam

University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most highly ranked universities of medicine and pharmacy in Vietnam. It offers graduate and postgraduate education in medicine, pharmacy. Originally, Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University was a medical school that belonged to the University of Saigon, which was founded in 1947 by French colonists in the period of French Indochina. Professor C. Massias was the principal. It was at 28 Testard/Tran Quy Cap Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City (Vo Van Tan Street today). On 31 August 1961, under the authority of the government of the Republic of Vietnam the school was split into two: Saigon College of Medicine and Saigon College of Pharmacy. In 1964Saigon College of Dentistry was founded from a division of the medical school. In 1976 after the Vietnam War, the three schools were merged with a new name — Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy — by an authority from the Communist Party of Vietnam. The first head office had two floors for offices, library, meeting room for lectures, and three side-by-side houses for studying. The practice areas for fundamental sciences and basic medicine were around Ho Chi Minh City such as Pasteur Institute (used to learn about parasitic, micro-organism), Human Body Institute (for anatomy), Saigon Hospital (for chemistry). The Installation of Human Body Institute was used to learn about histology, physiology, illness, anatomy. Students of Medicine and Pharmacy studied at the main installation until 1961. The Faculty of Pharmacy was moved to Nam Ki Khoi Nghia Street. November 16, 1966 the school was moved to Medicine Learning Center (Hong Bang Street, District 5) with well-equipped system, facility and students of Medicine and Dentistry have studied here up to date. It has the Main auditorium for 500 seats, three auditoriums with 300 seats each, library and labs. On 27 October 1976, the government re-organised schools in Saigon University Institute. There were eight schools left including Collective University, Institute of Technology, University of Technical Education of Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University, University of Economics, University of Architecture, University of Agriculture, University of Pedagogy. Although the new name does not reflect a fact that the dental school is a branch of the university system, it has been officially used until today.

Vietnam Military Medical University Faculty of Medicine, Viet Nam

Vietnam Military Medical University (with an original name as School of  Military Medicine), was found according to National Decree No 234/SL issued on 28th August 1948  and Ministerial Decree No 187/NĐ jointly issued on 4th October 1948 by Ministry of National Defence, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education. On 10th March 1949, School of Military Medicine opened the first course for military medical officers at Doi Tram in Tuan Lung village, Hoang Hoa ward, Tam Duong district, Vinh Phuc province. Thereafter, the date of 10th March was set as a foundation anniversary day of School. Up to now, School has passed through several eras with different names: School of Military Medicine (1949-1957), Military Officer Medical School (1957-1962), Institute of Military Medicine (1962-1966), Military Medical Collage (1966-1981), Vietnam Military Medical University (VMMU) (from 1981 up to now). From a small and simple basement, VMMU recently becomes a leading medical centre of the military and one of the big scientific centres in Vietnam. VMMU occupies these missions: to educate medical and pharmaceutical officers from primary training to graduated and post-graduated grades; to do medical researches and to perform clinical treatment. Nowadays, VMMU includes two teaching hospitals, one Military Nursing Faculty; 11 functional offices; 20 departments of fundamental medicine, military medicine, general science, social science and humanities; 37 departments of clinical medicines and laboratories; 7 centres and 4 regiments of students’ managements. Communist Party system directly belonging to VMMU Party Executive Committee compromises: one basic and direct party executive committee, one 3rd-level party executive committee, ten 2nd-level basic party executive committees and 32 basic party groups of party executive committee.

University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam

The Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Saigon was established in 1947 in Saigon as a division of the Indochina School of Medicine in Hanoi. In 1961, it was divided into the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy of Saigon. Then the Faculty of Dentistry was founded in 1964. Whereas, in the Resistance zone of the South-East of Vietnam the training of medical staff was provided by the College of Medicine established in 1965. Ho Chi Minh City was founded in 1976 as an integration of the above mentioned schools and was composed of three faculties: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Odonto- Stomatology. In 1994, the Faculty of Fundamental Sciences was established in order to provide the teaching of basic sciences to students of the three faculties during their first semesters of training. In 1998, the University was expanded to include the Medical School of Medicine. Then Tue Tinh National Medical School II and Department of Traditional Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine merged together to become the Faculty of Traditional Medicine. In 1999, the Faculty of Public Health was established, from the merger of the Public Health Department of the Faculty of Medicine and the Division of Health and Organization of the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Hygiene and Public Health. In 2000, the University opened its own medical center of 250 beds doted with modern medical equipment and highly qualified staff. This medical center was soon followed by four others, the total amount of beds of the University Medical Center was 500.Therefore, since 2000, the University was composed of the seven faculties mentioned above and one University Medical Center. In 2005, the university was recognized as one of the two strategic medical training institutions of the country. The University offers the most comprehensive array of training for health professionals from undergraduate to graduate level. The University Hospital is with 650 beds and modern teaching and research facilities. Besides scholastic training, the university offers an array of activities for the arts and sports to promote the moral qualities required for health professionals. The Youth Union and the Student Association have successfully appealed the students to participate in many meaningful social activities, sports and cultural events such as the “Green Summer”. These have raised the awareness of environmental protection, the necessity of stopping the disease in the population, the role of social campaign in family planning, against drug-addiction and HIV / AIDS. The Faculty of Medicine and Odonto-Stomatology share the main campus of the university, which is in the center of the fifth district of Ho Chi Minh City. The other faculties are located in the first, third, fifth, and Phu Nhuan districts of the city, which are also very convenient for transportation and living. With the increase in the number of students (more than 10,000), the expansion of our facilities is out of town. The skills-lab was set up and put into operation since March 2000 in order to provide and enhance preclinical skill training for students in regard to examination, operation, testing and communication. Its other mission is to develop a curriculum for simulation training and teaching materials with a description of the standard of study and management for common problems encountered in practice. Dormitory has greenery area, sport area to help students taking physical exercises after their school time. 02 were ground floor, 01 office hall, 01 meeting hall, 01 outdoor stage, 01 reading room, 01 computer room, 01 dining room, 01 coffee house, 01 stationery counter, 01 photocopy room , 01 health care room. Students as well as programs for Lunar New Year, Teacher’s Day as well as football, volleyball, badminton, ping-pong, chess competitions. Leaders regularly contact with agencies, unions, companies and individuals to sponsor scholarships for good students with difficult living conditions.
