Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Malaysia’s eighth university was officially incorporated on 24 December 1992. A university that is contemporary in character and forward-looking in outlook, it is committed in providing the nation with leaders, managers, scientists and technical specialists as well as thoughtful citizens who are capable of handling the complex challenges of our common future – confidently, competently, and creatively. With about 30 academic staff, the University opened its doors to the first batch of 118 students on 8 August 1993. The students were registered in the two pioneering faculties, the Faculty of Social Science and the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology. Two academic support centres were also established: the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia, and the Centre for Academic Information Services. The following year (1994) saw four more faculties opening their doors for degree courses: the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development, the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Information Technology. Staff and student numbers quadrupled. Meanwhile, the University also grew in profile as most faculties began to offer postgraduate programmes. Research activities began to take root with the establishment of the Institute of Biodiversity and Environment Conservation, which focuses on the myriad of flora and fauna in Borneo. Links with various universities abroad were also established. In the same year, the Centre for Technology Transfer and Consultancy UNIMAS, won the contract for EIA study of the Bakun Hydroelectric Project, the biggest ever EIA project in the country. The period between January 1995 and the end of December 1996 saw further consolidation in the academic and research structure of the university. Two more faculties began taking in their pioneer batches of students; the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (1995) and the Faculty of Economics and Business (1996). These brought the total number of faculties to eight, as originally planned. The Centre for Language & Communication Studies began to offer the TESL programme, in addition to generic language courses. The Institute of Health and Community Medicine, and the Institute of Software Technology were then added to the list of research institutes. The historic year of 1997 witnessed the pioneering batch of graduates receiving their degrees at the inaugural convocation of the University. The year also saw the establishment of the Institute of East Asian Studies. The year 2000 witnessed the change in the Vice-Chancellor seat; Professor Dato’ Zawawi Ismail, the first Vice-Chancellor succeeded by Professor Datuk Yusuf Hadi as the second Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS. Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Rashid Abdullah was appointed as the third Vice-Chancellor on 1 February 2005. From 2001 until 31 March 2013, Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid was appointed as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS.  YBhg Prof Dr Morshidi bin Sirat was later appointed as the fifth Vice-Chancellor on 1 April 2013. His tenure, however, was brief as he was recalled to occupy the position of Director General at the Ministry of Education, Malaysia. Consequently, YBhg Prof Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi took over as the sixth Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS on 16 April 2013. As of September 2013, UNIMAS total enrolment is 16,085 consisting of 14,033 undergraduates, 1,343 postgraduates and 709 pre-university students. In addition, a total of 2,189 staff have been employed as of August 2013. UNIMAS is an ISO-certified university. It was  granted the prestigious MS ISO 9001:2000 certification for excellence in its core management processes — from the intake of new students to certification of its graduates. Our undergraduate programmes have been designed to suit the needs of society and industry. MMMC was established in 1997 through the vision of Dr. Ramdas Pai, Chancellor of Manipal University, and the instrumental efforts of the late Datuk K Pathmanaban, former Malaysian Deputy Minister of Health. University Kuala Lumpur Royal College of Medicine Perak started out as Perak College of Medicine. It was wholly owned by the Perak State Government through its subsidiary the Perak State Secretary Incorporated (SSI). The initiative to set up the college was taken to enable the Perak State Government to salvage the defunct Asean Sheffield Medical College (ASMC) that ceased operations in October 1998 due to the economic downturn. Thus, P.C.M Sdn Bhd was incorporated on 18th February 1999 to acquire ASMC’s assets and to manage the college. Perak College of Medicine was set up as a private medical college.  The college started its humble operations on 1st October 1999 with the return of 28 former ASMC medical students from the United Kingdom and 7 dedicated staff members. RCMP started running the Sheffield MBChB medical degree program on a reverse twinning basis. The pioneer batch of 28 students from Sheffield MBChB medical degree program graduated in July 2002. However, the franchise agreement ended in 2005. There was no further intake of students after 2000 due to the policy changes made by GMC (UK) which no longer recognized medical degrees offered outside of Europe. On 15th March 2001, the then Chief Minister of Perak, Dato’ Seri Tajol Rosli bin Ghazali on his working visit to PCM proudly declared the college as a centre for medical education for the State of Perak.On 7th November 2001, PCM signed an agreement with University Malaya to conduct a Medical Degree course (MBBS) through a collaborative Education Agreement. The collaboration was on a temporary basis until the college could develop its own medical program. The first batch of 11 students enrolled under the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery University of Malaya, MBBS (UM) program graduated in 2006. The collaboration with University of Malaya ended in 2011 with a total number of 277 students graduating from the program. There was no further intake for MBBS (UM) program as Universiti Kuala Lumpur had by then come up with their its own medical program. In July 2006, UniKL RCMP launched its new MBBS UniKL program. Under the new MBBS UniKL program a total of 112 students were offered the new medical program. On 3rd August 2008, UniKL RCMP was appointed by the Malaysian government as the centre to train 40 Thai youths through the Malaysian Task Force 2010 and Thailand Task Force 960, under the Nursing Aid Program. The then Malaysian first lady, Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, officially launched the program. Since its establishment, UniKL RCMP has produced over 2000 graduates in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and Diploma in Allied Health Sciences disciplines. Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences was established by a group of prominent medical specialist and educators on 23 October 2005. The institution originally consisted of only 2 faculties offering  2 Bachelor’s degree programmes in medicine and pharmacy. It operated out of its first campus located at Street Mall, Cyberjaya. In 2009, CUCMS moved to its present location in anticipation of future student growth. The Faculty of Medicine at CUCMS is one of the founding faculties of the university. The first batch of students were enrolled in 2005 and graduated in 2010.The faculty offers the following programme: Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The university’s fully accredited medical programme, running since 2005, has produced over 834 doctors. The MBBS programme provides an impactful and excellent education and training in medicine. In addition to printed collection, the CUCMS Library and Knowledge Centre also maintains a large collection of electronic journals and databases accessible via the Internet. Students of CUCMS would have the best both worlds when it comes to library and information resources support. The Varsity Lodge is a 1,500-capacity residential hostel/ apartment that provides students with a spacious living environment during their years at CUCMS. The Lodge comes complete with a swimming pool, tennis court, basketball court, gymnasium, laundry mart, cafeteria, security office and is located next to Gem In Mall that provides students with all necessary amenities. There is a University Shuttle Bus service available that ferries students between the campus and Varsity Lodge, which is situated a mere 10 minutes from the campus. Every unit will be occupied by 8 students and two students per room. Every apartment is about 1180 sq-feet of range, which consists of 4 rooms, 3 bathrooms, 1 shared living room and kitchen area.The building is equipped with CCTV 24 hours a day for added security. A wide range of laboratories is provided in Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences for students to apply their theoretical knowledge into practical skills.
