Brescia University was founded by the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph in 1950. Its origins are in Mount Saint Joseph Junior College for Women, established at Maple Mount, Kentucky, in 1925. Between 1925 and 1950, coeducational extension courses in Owensboro led to the creation of a second campus and, after 1949, consolidation of the two campuses at the present site of Brescia University. In 1951, Brescia began operating as a four-year College. Brescia University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate, baccalaureate, and masters degrees. Brescia University is a coeducational Catholic university in Owensboro, Kentucky, in the United States. Founded as a junior collegefor women, it is now a coeducational university offering undergraduate and master’s programs. Brescia University boasts a number of on campus clubs and organizations, most notably the Student Activities Program Board (SAPB). SAPB sends members annually to the NACA Mid America Regional conference that brings in Activities Programming Board members from colleges across Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Illinois. Westminster Hospital Medical School, UK

The Westminster Hospital Medical School was formally founded in 1834 by George Guthrie, an ex-military surgeon – although students had been taken on at Westminster Hospital almost from the hospital’s foundation in 1719 (the traditional name at the Westminster was “cubs”). The hospital and medical school moved to larger buildings several times in the decades that followed, leading to conflict among the staff on several occasions. Guthrie’s forceful urgings on retaining the location of the hospital and school on one occasion resulted in an argument climaxing in a pistol duel between two surgeons. One early Westminster student was John Snow, later the founder of modern epidemiology. In 1905, the teaching of pre-clinical subjects ended at Westminster, and moved to King’s College. The school was taken over by the army in 1914 to train pathologists for the war effort. Student numbers and the school suffered as a result, and it was only after 1920 that numbers improved. In 1984, Westminster Hospital Medical School merged with local rivals Charing Cross Hospital Medical School to form Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School. This move was part of a general series of mergers in the London medical schools in the early 1980s. Westminster Hospital moved to the site of St Stephen’s Hospital on Fulham Road in Chelsea in 1993, and changed its name to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. In 1997, CXWMS merged with the National Heart and Lung Institute at the Royal Brompton Hospital, and Imperial College London, whose medical department was St Mary’s Hospital Medical School. The new institution was called Imperial College School of Medicine, and was at the time the largest medical school in the UK. The Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine is the largest and oldest continuously operating medical school in Virginia. The school traces its beginnings to the 1838 opening of the medical department of Hampden–Sydney College, which in 1854 became an independent institution known as the Medical College of Virginia. In 1968, MCV joined with the Richmond Professional Institute to form Virginia Commonwealth University. The School of Medicine is one of five schools within the VCU Medical Center. Located on VCU’s MCV Campus in Richmond, Virginia, the medical school offers dozens of master’s, doctoral and interdisciplinary programs in addition to the M.D. degree, postdoctoral research and residency training opportunities. Third- and fourth-year School of Medicine students may elect to train at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Northern Virginia, and the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park in Richmond gives faculty and students an incubator to grow bioscience companies and research programs. With more than 300 basic science investigators, the School of Medicine accounts for more than half of VCU’s sponsored research awards and more than 85 percent of the university’s National Institutes of Health funding. The medical school provides educational expertise and clinical services to the patients of the VCU Medical Center. The medical center offers comprehensive contemporary medical services including the region’s Level 1 Trauma Center, a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive-Care Unit, a translational research center, a comprehensive organ transplantation center, a research and rehabilitation center, a children’s mental health facility, a burn care center, with a teaching hospital with 779 beds and 650 physicians. Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center is one of 35 designated Ebola centers. VCU faculty staff the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center and VCU faculty serve as national Veterans Administration directors for rehabilitation medicine, radiation oncology, primary care and residency education. Educational programs include medical undergraduate, graduate, masters and PhD pathways. Additionally, a Premedical Graduate Certificate Program delivers a one-year, intensive graduate-level program for students to enhance their qualifications for admission into professional school, including medical, dental and veterinary school. The Egyptian Building, a National Historic Landmark, is an Egyptian Revival style building completed in 1845. It was the first permanent home of the Medical Department of Hampden–Sydney College which became the VCU School of Medicine. The building has a large lecture hall, smaller classroom and simulation facilities, and an academic unit.
