Now NEET candidates only have 3 attempts, age cap introduced

You now have to be at least 17 and not over 25 years old to give the NEET paper. The National-Eligibility-cum-Entrance-Test (NEET) has introduced limits to the number of times aspirants can attempt the paper and the age of the candidates. Now, candidates can only try their hand at the paper three times and cannot be older than 25 years (30 years for reserved category), a surprising turn to a national examination that had no limit on the number of attempts and age till date. This has been done to bring down the number of older candidates competing with 17-year-old candidates (the minimum age limit), and to prevent fraud and cheating. According to data collected from the Maharashtra directorate of medical education and research (DMER), the oldest candidate was 38-years-old and at least another 100 aspirants were in their early 30s, TOI reports. This year, candidates have been eagerly waiting for the notification of NEET 2017 but it has been delayed over a long time. Even the official website of NEET is not available as it is under construction. In 2016, the NEET examination replaced the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) which used to take place every year in the month of May. It has been made mandatory for admissions in all-India medical/ dental colleges. NEET 2017: New conditions spark another debate

Medical aspirants will now be allowed a maximum of three attempts to clear the entrance test, that too till the age of 25. A year after its stormy debut, NEET has once again sparked a debate among medical aspirants and parents. This time it is the introduction of a cap on the number of attempts and the upper age limit.The University Grants Commission last week said that students would be allowed to take the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) only thrice, that too until the age of 25. No such conditions existed earlier. While the government is yet to bring out a notification on the new changes, the decision has evoked mixed reactions. “The age criterion is a positive step but why discriminate between reserved and open category [The age limit for the reserved category is 30],” said Sudha Shenoy, a member of Mission 2017, a forum comprising parents of NEET aspirants. A student is eligible for NEET at 17, after Class XII and if that student makes continuous attempts, he or she would become ineligible for test after 20. This, according to Shenoy, is unreasonable as the students have eight years between 17 and 25. “Five attempts per candidate is a reasonable figure,” she said. Some parents say students continue to take the entrance test to secure a seat in a government-run medical college where fees are much lower. “Exorbitant fees charged by private medical colleges and deemed universities deter us from opting for them as we cannot cough up fees that run into lakhs,” said a student who is preparing for NEET. Those who could not get admission last year are under tremendous pressure to make it through this time, said Mahendra Choudhari, whose daughter is preparing for a second attempt. He said his daughter could not secure admission last year because of the chaos that ensued after the Supreme Court made NEET mandatory for all institutes in the country. Move will curb fraud, cheating But some parents, officials and people from the field of education feel the cap on attempts and age will bring down cases of fraud and cheating. “It is definitely a step in the right direction as we cannot have 30-year-olds writing NEET,” said Dr Purvi Shah whose daughter will take NEET for the first time this year. “The move will encourage students to crack the exam in one single attempt. It will help restrain them [candidates] from spoiling the crucial years of their life and instead opt for an alternative career early,” said Aakash Chaudhry, director of Aakash Educational Services, which runs a chain of coaching classes. “It will also help vacate the number of seats for other students who have been preparing for it and will be attempting NEET for the first time to pursue a career in medicine,” he said. NEET to be held in these 8 languages – Here’s list

New Delhi: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in medical colleges will be held in eight languages- Hindi, English, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu- for the academic year 2017-18. Also, the candidate qualifying NEET will be eligible for all India quota and other quotas under the State governments and Institutes irrespective of the medium taken by candidates, subject to other eligibility criteria, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement. In May, Union Health Minister J P Nadda had held a meeting with the Health Ministers and Health Secretaries of 18 states/Union Territories towards implementation of NEET across states. Joint Secretary, Medical Education, A K Singhal said, “The collaborative efforts of Central Health Ministry with the state health ministries have lead to this decision so as to bring parity for the students who have taken the State Board exams.” NEET has replaced AIPMT and has been made mandatory for admissions in all-India medical/dental colleges which means no other state can conduct its separate medical entrance. Thamar University Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Yemen

The inception of the university dates back to 1990 when the Faculty of Education was established at Dhamar as a teaching center of Sana’a University. Departments such as English, Arabic, History, Geography, Islamic Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, were opened. In 1993 another College of Education was opened at Radaa. Thamar University is the alma mater of some 136,000 undergraduate and graduate students, drawn from almost all over governorates of Yemen. A number of students are from abroad. On the faculty of the university there more than 520 faculty members both native and expatriate from Arab as well as foreign countries. The number of students to be enrolled every year in each college is determined by the Students’ Affairs Council of Dhamar University and is approved by the High Council for Yemeni Universities. About three months before the commencement of the academic year, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announces the date of the admission and the admission test. Dhamar University has faculties of: Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Administrative Sciences, Physical Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Literature and Language arts, Feqh and Shariaah, Art, Education, Tourism and Hotels.

MBBS students to protest against NEXT exam tomorrow

MBBS students from across the state will protest on Wednesday opposing to the proposed National Exit Test (NEXT). The students will be joined by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). NEXT is part of the proposal mooted by the Union Health Ministry as part of the amendments to be introduced in the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Act. According to the proposal, students are mandated to clear NEXT to obtain license to practice. Students believe that taking an entrance exam in addition to their MBBS exams would be taxing. Dr Manoop Kumaraswamy, member, Young Doctors’ Association, IMA said, “What is the necessity for an exam when we are already preparing for NEET PG? Students will have to clear yet another exam. Instead, the government can just refine the existing system. Besides, we are told that even Ayush doctors clearing this exam will be granted permission to prescribe allopathy medicines after a bridge course.” Dr Rajashekara Bellary, president, IMA Karnataka said, “Those who have cleared MBBS are expected to take the exam. What is the use of having studied the course for five-and-a-half years then? It is an unnecessary burden on students. Students will also lose faith in the system of study then.” In a memorandum, the students have said, “The examinations are conducted by universities which are recognised by University Grants Commission and MBBS examination is therefore rightfully a qualifying examination for the degree of Modern Medicine. Therefore, introducing NEXT as a qualifying examination is unnecessary and makes the university examination redundant.” They also say that converting a competitive examination into both a qualifying examination and competitive examination for post graduation is not in the students’ interest as the structure and objective of a qualifying examination for admission to post graduation is different from a qualifying examination that is meant for assessing the minimum qualification required to receive the degree.
